Ingrown Toenails
That Red, Swollen Toe? It’s Probably an Ingrown Toenail—and We Can Fix It.
It Starts With a Little Tenderness…
You notice it when you put on your socks. Or maybe when your foot bumps the inside of your shoe. Your big toe feels a little sore. The edge of the nail looks puffy—maybe even red or irritated.
You try soaking it. You trim the corner. You switch shoes.
But the pain only gets worse. Now there’s swelling. Maybe some drainage. It might even be hard to walk.
That’s not just a nail problem—it’s likely an ingrown toenail, and it won’t get better on its own.
At Rappahannock Foot & Ankle Specialists, we treat ingrown nails every day—safely, gently, and permanently when needed.
What Is an Ingrown Toenail?
An ingrown toenail happens when the corner or side of the nail grows into the surrounding skin. This creates irritation, inflammation, and often, painful infection.
While it most commonly affects the big toe, it can happen on any toenail. Left untreated, it can lead to:
- Infection
- Abscess formation
- Difficulty walking
- Recurring episodes
Why Do Ingrown Toenails Happen?
Several everyday habits or foot structures can lead to ingrown nails:
- Improper nail trimming (curved instead of straight across)
- Tight shoes or socks that press the nail into the skin
- Injury or trauma to the nail (like stubbing your toe)
- Inheriting a curved or wide nail shape
- Sweaty feet or poor nail hygiene
- Repeated pressure from sports like soccer, running, or dance
Signs You May Have an Ingrown Toenail
- Pain along one or both sides of the toenail
- Redness and swelling at the nail edge
- Warmth, tenderness, or throbbing in the toe
- Pus or fluid drainage (sign of infection)
- Skin growing over part of the nail
- Trouble wearing shoes or walking comfortably
How RFAS Treats Ingrown Toenails—Gently and Permanently
We take a compassionate, same-day approach—especially when you're in pain.
Quick In-Office Relief If the toenail is infected or inflamed, we’ll numb the area and gently remove the ingrown portion of the nail. This is a fast, low-pain procedure performed right in the office—most patients say the numbing is the hardest part!
Permanent Solution (Matrixectomy) If your nail repeatedly becomes ingrown, we can permanently remove the problematic nail edge using a special medicated technique. The rest of your nail stays intact, but the curved edge no longer grows back.
Wound Care & Follow-Up We provide step-by-step care instructions, dressing supplies, and check-ins as needed. Most patients are back in regular shoes within 1–2 days, with minimal restrictions.
Footwear & Nail Trimming Guidance We’ll teach you how to trim your nails properly (straight across), and help you choose shoes that don’t press on your toes.
Why Home Remedies Aren’t Enough
We get it—you want to avoid the doctor’s office. But "bathroom surgery" with nail clippers or soaking for weeks rarely works. Worse, it can cause:
- Worsening infection
- Nail deformity
- Skin damage
- Recurrence that’s even more painful
We hear this all the time: "I wish I’d come in sooner. That was so much easier than I expected."
We Also Treat Pediatric Ingrown Toenails
Kids and teens—especially athletes—are prone to ingrown nails from rapid growth, tight shoes, or sports like soccer and dance. We treat children with the same gentle techniques, often providing same-day relief so they can stay active without pain.
Don’t Let That Toe Keep Ruining Your Week
Whether it’s the first time or a recurring issue, we can relieve your pain and stop it from coming back. You don’t have to limp around, soak endlessly, or keep trimming in fear.
