Bunions
That Bump by Your Big Toe? It’s Not Just in Your Head.
It Starts With a Bump…
One day, you glance down and see something new: a small bump forming at the base of your big toe. It’s a little red. A little swollen. Your shoes feel tighter than they used to.
You think, “Did my mom have this too?” You remember her sore feet, the way she hated shopping for shoes, how she limped through long days.
But here's the good news: It doesn’t have to get that bad. At Rappahannock Foot & Ankle Specialists, we catch bunions early, relieve pain, and help you stay active—with or without surgery.
What Is a Bunion?
A bunion (also called hallux valgus) is a bony bump at the base of your big toe. It’s more than just a skin-deep issue—bunions happen when the bones in the front of your foot shift out of alignment. The big toe drifts toward the second toe, while the metatarsal bone angles outward, forming that telltale bump.
Over time, bunions can lead to:
- Swelling and inflammation
- Joint pain or stiffness
- Trouble wearing normal shoes
- Toe crowding or overlapping
- Changes in how you walk
Why Did This Happen to Me?
Bunions are most often caused by faulty foot mechanics—something you inherit, not something you cause. Flat feet, loose ligaments, and certain walking patterns put stress on the big toe joint, eventually pushing it out of alignment.
Other common contributors:
- Wearing tight, narrow, or high-heeled shoes
- Past foot injuries or trauma
- Differences in leg length
- Certain types of arthritis
- Family history (thanks, Grandma!)
How Do I Know If It’s Really a Bunion?
You might have a bunion if:
- You see a visible bump at the side of your big toe joint
- The joint is sore, swollen, or red
- Your big toe drifts toward the second toe
- It’s harder to find shoes that fit comfortably
- The joint feels stiff or less flexible
- You’ve developed corns or calluses between toes
We also check for tailor’s bunions (bunionettes)—similar bumps that form on the outside of the foot, near the pinky toe.
How We Treat Bunions at RFAS
We start with a physical exam and digital X-rays to assess the severity of your bunion and identify the root cause.
Conservative (Nonsurgical) Treatment Our first goal is always to reduce pain and slow progression:
- Custom Orthotics: Not the one-size-fits-all inserts from the store. These are handcrafted to stabilize your foot mechanics and take pressure off the bunion.
- Shoe Advice: We help you find styles that fit and feel good—wider toe boxes, cushioned soles, and supportive arches.
- Padding & Taping: Helps relieve pressure and realign the toe temporarily.
- Anti-Inflammatories & Ice: Reduce pain and swelling during flare-ups.
- Foot Strengthening & Correct Toes®: For mild to moderate bunions, we often recommend a program of targeted foot exercises paired with Correct Toes® toe spacers. This gentle, progressive approach encourages better alignment, strengthens foot muscles, and promotes natural foot function over time. It’s not a quick fix—but it is effective with consistency.
- Bracing or Bunion Splints: While they won’t "fix" the bunion, they can help relieve pain and prevent rubbing.
⚠️ Beware of gimmicky “bunion correctors.” They may offer temporary comfort, but they won’t reverse the underlying bone misalignment.
When Is Surgery the Right Choice?
If your bunion is causing:
- Daily pain
- Difficulty walking
- Limited activity
- Shoe intolerance...and conservative care no longer helps, it may be time to consider surgery.
Our board-certified foot and ankle surgeons are skilled in modern bunion correction techniques. We choose the procedure based on your X-rays, toe alignment, and lifestyle. The goal? A straighter toe, a functional joint, and a return to comfort.
Recovery varies, but many patients can walk immediately in a protective surgical shoe, depending on the procedure.
And yes—custom orthotics after surgery help prevent the bunion from coming back.
