Haglund's Deformity
Heel Callus
Heel Fissures
Plantar Fasciitis (heel spur)
Heel Bursitis: At the posterior or plantar aspects of the heel are bursas which can become inflamed with trauma (aka “Stone Bruises”) or swelling from lymphedema or venous insufficiency. A tight Achilles tendon or Haglund’s deformity can irritate the bursa at the back of the heel and cause pain
Heel Neuritis/Nerve Entrapment: The posterior tibial nerve branch can become trapped or irritated with excessive pronation, swelling or after trauma. The terminal branch of the Sciatic nerve ends in the back and lateral aspect of the heel. A pinched nerve at the back, hip or thigh can result in heel pain. The tarsal tunnel (similar to the carpal tunnel of the wrist) is a tight area where the posterior tibial nerve is frequently entrapped.

| Studies show that care for a bedridden patient costs much more than care for an ambulatory patient. In their private practices and in foot clinics, podiatric physicians are providing services designed to keep older people on their feet, and they serve in hospitals and nursing homes across the country. |
