- Residency Overview
- This program is a comprehensive three-year foot and ankle surgical residency. Experience includes over two thousand pediatric and adult reconstructive and trauma procedures. A significant focus at Yale University is a multidisciplinary approach towards diabetic limb salvage and limb preservation. Residents train with attending physicians from Plastic and Vascular Surgery as well as Orthopedic Surgery to treat the high-risk limb. Various forms of internal and external fixation including Ilizarov frames are utilized to treat complex lower extremity deformities. Plastic surgical techniques are stressed with creation of random and pedicle fasciocutaneous skin flaps to cover large wounds.
Extensive in-house patient management skills are gained through our own podiatric service at Yale, VA West Haven, St. Raphael’s Hospital in New Haven, and the New Britain General Hospital in New Britain, Connecticut. Through outpatient and private clinics, residents accrue extensive clinical knowledge of not only pre and post-surgical planning including management of complications, but also conservative diabetic wound care using standard and new technologies. Residents also rotate through Plastic, Orthopedic, and Vascular clinics in all three years of residency. In addition to clinical and surgical training, academic knowledge is acquired through research projects, grand rounds, journal club, M&M, and resident presentations.
